Being in Bangkok airport is like being inside a very expensive hamster cage. It is bright and airy but everything is big and it's a long way from one end to the other.

The airport has the codes; IATA: BKK, ICAO: VTBS. It has the world's tallest control tower at 132.2 metres / 434 feet, and is the world's third largest single-building airport terminal (563,000 square metres / 6,060,000 square feet). It is also the 5th busiest airport in Asia, having handled 40.5 million passengers in 2009, and is also a major air cargo hub. The name Suvarnabhumi was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej and refers to the 'Golden Kingdom' hypothesised to have been located somewhere in Southeast Asia.

We arrived after an overnight flight from London on route to Sydney and Auckland on a Qantas 747 and although just on a stopover of about 90min we had to treck at low level but still above ground from our gate to the security site at the west 'crossing', then up some stairs and back to the gate at high level where there was another layer of security. This time only two staff to check nearly 300 px, so no wonder we were late leaving! We didn't have time to check for refreshments but no doubt there are some, internet is free using a password given in return for your name and flight no.

It turns out that we were in the south-west arm of a giant 'H' and no wonder it's the third largest airport building in the world. Some of the central arm and the south east arm can be seen in one of my photos. There are several large sculptures and pagodas within the walkways, one can be seen with yt in another photo.
