Top defense of Minho in the twelfth century, constitutes the most northern sentinel of Portugal, the stretch where the river Minho begins its function of border, guarding the crossing to Galicia.

The construction of the castle dates back to 1170, for determination of D. Afonso Henriques (1112-1185).

All that remains of the former mediaeval fortification are: the keep and part of the 12C castle with prismatic battlements and the northern and western gates; part of the barbican and the towers that once flanked one of the gates.
