This monument to the crash of a German helicopter is located on the military side of Kabul International Airport on apron 8 just outside the passenger terminal. At the time of the crash, this side of the airport was not yet built up and was an industrial park. "The helicopter accident, thought to have been caused by a mechanical failure, also claimed the lives of two youths on the ground at the crash site... according to Kabul Police Chief Abdul Basir. Col. Andreas Steffan, a spokesman for the German contingent of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said the chopper was on a routine mission when it went down just before 4 p.m. Witnesses saw a fire on board shortly before the crash but heard no explosion to indicate a rocket attack, Steffan said."***

Today, if you fly on a NATO aircraft into Kabul, you will pass this monument located on the accident site as you make your way into the passenger terminal. Also located near the German monument is another memorial in the form of an Eagle for Turkish Forces fighting in OEF.

You will not be able to visit this site unless you are transisting through the airport with official NATO/US credentials and on official business to fly in or out of Kabul.

As always, PLEASE PRACTICE GOOD OPSEC when logging this waymark.
