This dome is not apparent from the outside, but upon entering the lobby one's eyes are drawn to the huge marble columns, then upward to this magnificent stained glass dome. There are matching stained glass windows around the side, and historic murals. Built in 1903 with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation.

The Henry A. Lorberg Local History Department was established in 1995 as part of the new addition to the Main Library. Named for the local historian who procured the original funding for the Carnegie building, the department houses the Library's local history and genealogy materials, a superb research resource.

The Portsmouth Public Library system operates five branches including those in the neighboring communities of New Boston, Wheelersburg, South Webster and Lucasville.
