A plaque showing the first bank in Aberystwyth, probably the first bank in the whole of Wales that opened in 1760 to serve the booming maritime community when Aberystwyth was a major port between Wales and Ireland.
The plaque reads, first in Welsh, and secondly in English:-
HEN DY BANC
Yma yn 1760 agorwyd y banc cyntaf
yn Aberystwyth ac, o bosib yng Nghymru
Roedd BANC Y LLONG yn gwasanaethu'r
gymuned arforol
OLD BANK HOUSE
The first bank in Aberystwyth, and possibly
in Wales, was opened here in 1760
Known as the SHIP BANK, it served
the maritime community.
Cymdeithas ddinesig Aberystwyth civic society.
I have carried out some research into early banks and the reason that they use the term possibly on the plaque is because there was a Bank in Swansea dock, but it is unknown when it opened as its early paper work was destroyed in a fire. So it could be said that this building is the earliest confirmed bank in Wales.
