Bergün/Bravuogn is the official name of this municipality since 1942. Bergün is German, Bravuogn is Bargunsenser (a variant of the Romansh dialect Putér). It is a municipality in the district Albula in the canton grisons in South-East Switzerland.

The area has been populated since the Bronze Age as many relics of this era show. Written history of this place starts in 1188 with the oldest dated building in town, the church; "La Tuer" the main tower in town center is from about 1000, but it is not mentioned in old documents until its partial destruction in the big fire of 1323.

The town was part of the authority of Greifenstein until 1394 it was bought by the bishop of Chur. In 1537 the municipality paid 2300 Guilders for its independence.

In 1592 Bergün became reformed. The reformation came over the pass from the Engadin; as a consequence the inhabitants took over the written language Putér although the spoken dialect in the valley (Bargunzener) belongs to a different line within the Romansh language.

In 1696 the first road over the mountains was built and in 1868 the Albulapost started with with stage coaches. In 1903 the Albula railway line was built. This was the starting point for tourism.

In the first two decades of the 20nd century the hamlets of Latsch and Stugls were incorporated.

In the current days Bergün and its Hamlets have about 520 inhabitants on 190 square kilometers. This means it is one of the smallest towns in Switzerland by population and one of the largest by area.

Most inhabitants work in the fields of agriculture and tourism. In 2008 the railway line was awarded a UNESCO world heritage site, this had a great influence on rail enthusiastic tourists. Currently a railway museum is going to be built next to the railway station. Apart of that in Winter the highlight is Europe's longest sled run and a bit of (beginners) skiing and hiking in Summer.

The town hall is a large red building in the town center. It is a multi-use building that also has school rooms and the municipality police office. Strange enough, there is no sign or plaque or anything that would tell you this is the town hall. I had to search a while until I found that the inscription on the letter box is the only evidence that this is in fact the local town hall.
