The Airport
At the time of our visit for this waymark, February 2011, the airport terminal was undergoing major construction, as shown in the photos, and was actually closed. All passengers and luggage were unloaded on the tarmac and exited through a small gate. The ultimate goal seems to be for an international airport and facilities, similar to its sister airport in Kalibo. For now it retains its atmosphere of a small rural island airport, with its collection of street vendors and tricycles.

This is also the nearest airport to the boats taking tourists to the small island of Boracay just off shore. Boracay is the premier international tourist destination in the Philippines with its white sand beaches. Projections are for a million annual visitors within the next couple of years. The other airport for Boracay-bound tourists is in Kalibo, a few miles further away, but already upgraded to an international airport with direct flights to Hong Hong and other Asian airports.
