Melbourne departure lounge offers the usual mix of drinks and snacks, panoramic windows to the north and west, and wifi access (didn't have time to sample this whilst I was there as only on a short stop-over, flying from Auckland to Singapore). Enlarged to handle the A380, this airport is one of the busiest in Australia, there are over 30 international, domestic and dedicated freighter airlines operating from here, and the Melbourne - Sydney route is the fourth most-travelled passenger air route in the world and the busiest in the Asia Pacific region.

Journey consists of two sculptures, North and West. They are placed to the north and west of the departure lounge of the airport. North has its painted fibreglass surface white, grey and black whilst that on West is red, black, grey and white. The fibreglass painted sections are mounted on various arrangements of geometric shapes, cones, spheres, cubes, etc. There is a stainless steel plaque adjacent to each of the sculptures with details of artist, year of creation and materials.

Made in 1996 of stainless steel, bronze, aluminium, and fibreglass these large abstract sculptures were commissioned by the airport authorities from the Japanese-Australian Sculptor Akio Makigawa.

Akio Makigawa (1948-1999) was born in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Japan on 29th October 1948. He moved to Australia in 1977 and after a long and productive career as Print Maker and Sculptor, mainly working in Victoria, he died in Perth, WA, on 24th December 1999.
