The "D. João I" course, in October of 2009, celebrated 50 years of entry into the Naval School. To commemorate the event, has decided to start this celebration with a pilgrimage to the Monastery of Batalha, where the patron is buried, to pay homage to his figure, as someone who had the merit of knowing how to use the sea for the benefit of the greatness of the country, leaving in place a witness to link of the course to the historical character.

Day April 5 was chosen because it was the eve of the acclamation of the Master of Aviz as King of Portugal and as for being an early date of his birth on April 11.

Reinforcing this idea, with the support of the Navy, and the involvement of the local authority, and the good will of all who have embraced the idea, was placed in the central square of the monastery, near the statue of Condestável in place of visibility, an iron ship anchor, from one of the Corvettes slaughtered in service, topped with a plaque designed expressly for the occasion by a member of the course and built by local craftsmen from a school of stone work. The board includes the shell of D. João I, the Cross of Christ, the heraldic escutcheon of "Sagres" where the "DJ" started in his naval adventures, and a tie that represents members of the course.
