The 'Schneekopf' at Gehlberg (Ilm-Kreis) is 978 m above sea level. Among the 'Großer Beerberg' (983 m) it's the second-highest mountain in the Thuringian Forest.

The mountain is of volcanic origin and consists of porphyry.
It's known for occurring here Schneekopfkugeln,
porphyry balls (Druze),
inside the crystals (agates)
trained.
They were formed during a volcanic eruption in the Permian.
On the northern slope of the mountain springs the Wilde Gera.
From the summit plateau there is good visibility to other peaks of the Thuringian Forest
and the Rhön,
on the Thuringian Basin and up to the Ettersberg in Weimar and the resort of Oberhof. In very good visibility conditions,
such as winter temperature inversions, the
view from the Brocken in the Harz,
the Schneeberg (Fichtelgebirge) and
the western Erzgebirge.
In addition, the highway bridge Wilde Gera
(BAB71),
which is the largest with 252 m span arch bridge in Germany,
is visible.
