Francis Owen Salisbury was born on 18th December 1874 in Harpenden. The son of a plumber decorator and ironmonger, he was apprenticed to his elder brother as a stained glass painter. So good was the young Frank that his brother sponsored him to attend Heatherley’s School of Art. From here Frank won a scholarship to the Royal Academy.

Lord Wakefield took the young Salisbury under his wing and introduced him to influential people in society that set him on the road to being a foremost society portrait artist. He painted twenty five members of the Royal Family, he painted the official Coronation portrait of King George VI, and was the first artist to paint Queen Elizabeth II. Winston Churchill was also a frequent sitter for Salisbury.

As well as success in Great Britain, Frank Salisbury was also a great success in America. He painted six presidents, his portrait of Franklin D Roosevelt being the official White House portrait.
