Silver Sands Beach is located on the eastern side of the Great Salt Lake State Marina. Parking for the beach is at the marina. Clean bathrooms and fresh water are available. If you plan on eating lunch, you’ll want to pack your own picnic because food is not available at the marina. The beach and marina are day-use only and a fee is required upon entry.
Due to the wildly fluctuating shoreline there is no real development on the lake. This leaves wonderful, unspoiled views and nice marshes for migrating birds. The sand is very fine and gray-brown in color. It’s not really ideal for sand-castle making due to the decaying brine shrimp and brine fly matter just below the surface of the sand. When you dig in the sand the blackish matter is exposed to the air and it has a very pungent aroma.
Because the Great Salt Lake is very shallow, you may find a small amount of beach, or a couple of hundred yards. It completely depends on how much water the up-stream area received the year before. In the low water years, there is plenty of beach area for kite flying.
If you decide to try the water you will probably be able to see the brine shrimp swimming around you as many of them are bright orange or white so they are clearly visible. When you head back to your blanket on the beach you will notice salt crystals forming on your legs and on the hair of your arms as you dry off.
The Silver Sands Beach is an ideal place to take in a spectacular sunset. They are plentiful so don’t forget to bring your camera.
Swimming, picnicking, bird watching kite flying & sunbathing are just some of the activities you will be able to participate in on this beach.
