«Bankplassen's proudest building is the former Norges Bank headquarters of 1907, a redoubtable Art Nouveau edifice with an imposing granite facade; it now houses the enterprising Museet for Samtidskunst (Contemporary Art Museum). The museum owns work by every major post-war Norwegian artist and many leading foreign figures too, and for the most part the displays take the form of a series of temporary, thematic exhibitions spread over three floors. The works, some of which are massive, are each allowed a generous amount of space, so – given that the museum also hosts prestigious international exhibitions – only a fraction of the permanent collection can be shown at any one time. Nonetheless, Norwegian names to look out for include Bjørn Carlsen, Frans Widerberg, Erik Killi Olsen, Knut Rose and Bjørn Ransve.»
