Bangkok, the western name for the capital city of Thailand, is a nickname, which translates as village by the river. The true and correct name of this city is the longest place name extant, according to the Guinness Book of Records. As follows (as transliterated from Thai to English):

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.

In translation:
"The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarma".

Thai people refer to the city by the first two of these words 'Krung Thep'.

This name was given to the city by its founder, the first king of the Chakri dynasty (which still rules Thailand), King Rama 1 in 1782, and later modified by the fifth King of the same dynasty.

Memorising the full name of the city is a feat taught to Thai school children.

Outside the Bangkok City Hall, the full name of the city, in Thai, is printed in gold letters on a black background. There are two accompanying plaques (one in Thai, the other in English) explaining the origin and history of the name.
