Formerly known as Luneta, this park on Manila Bay has been named Rizal Park in honor of the Philippines' most revered national hero. After being arrested on his way to Cuba as a volunteer physician to treat victims of yellow fever, Dr. Rizal was imprisoned in Spain, then brought to Manila where he was found guilty of treason, sedition, and conspiracy and sentenced to death. A few days later, after bidding farewell to his family and writing a poem, now inscribed on a wall here, he faced a firing squad with dignity and heroism. Although he had never supported armed revolution, his death became the spark that ignited the independence movement into a full scale war of independence, resulting in the end of hundreds of years of Spanish tyranny, only to be replaced by another half-century of military occupation by the United States.

This tableau was created in 1991, and features dozens of bronze figures in the scene of Rizal's execution - the firing squad, witnesses, priests, and even a dog. This is surrounded by life-size bronze scenes from different periods in Rizal's life. A narrated program makes this come to life.

This stone bridge is part of a beautifully landscaped entrance that includes a pond, shrubs, flowers and trees against the backdrop of a stone wall that displays large bronze relief sculptures depicting scenes from Dr. Rizal's life.
