The unusual Baroque Basilica of the Virgin Mary Visitation (In Czech: Bazilika Navštívení Panny Marie) with beautifully decorated interior and the neighbouring Franciscan Monastery are situated at the foot of northern slopes of Jizera Mountains. The history of this famous pilgrim place is written from 13th century, but Basilica itself was built on the place of old Gothic church in 1722–1729 by architect Thomas Haffenecker. The Hejnice Basilica is a single-nave Baroque church with a groundplan of the Latin cross, with aisles and central 35 m high dome. The painting in the dome, work of Viennese artist Andreas Groll, depicts three main scenes – Ascension
of Our Lady, Christ's Crucifixion and Angels carrying the Holy Cross.
