Utah's capitol building construction cost was a staggering USD 2.7 million dollars. Noted for its light color and design. Massive ionic columns, each carved from a single piece of marble, are thought to be the largest solid marble columns in the United States. Epic paintings around the arches and the rotunda represent Brigham Young and the Mormon pioneers. No admission fee.
This building is actually Utah's second capital building. The first was located in Filmore Utah and was built there by federal decree, but only one wing of that building was finished before Salt Lake City was made the territorial capitol in 1855.
Guided tours of the Capitol are given hourly from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The building itself is open Monday-Friday: 8 am-8 pm; Saturday and Sunday: 8 am-5 pm.
