The
Colorado State Capitol was constructed during the 1890s with almost 240,000 cubic feet of Colorado white granite, architect was
Elijah E. Myers. First opening was in November 1894. The
dome was gilded in 1908 using 200 ounces of pure gold leaf in commemoration of the Gold Rush in Colorado. According to the Colorado State Archives website, the beautiful
rotunda was built in the center of the Greek cross floor plan. The rotunda is made up of 128 pilasters, 60 spotlights, and sixteen stained glass windows in a Corinthian style. Standing on the first floor the dome is almost 150 feet overhead, providing more than 220,000 cubic feet of space.
