«The archbishop Paris Lodron had the idea, but it was not until archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun, that the building could be realised and sanctified in the year 1707.

The architect of the Collegiate Church was Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach who set with this particular building the standards for a lot of late-baroque churches in his area.

Four openly built chapels form the shape of the church. Each chapel is dedicated to one saint of the four faculties: Thomas von Aquin (theology), Ivo (law), Lukas (medicine) and Katharina (philosophy).

On the left hand side of the church a group of statues represents the four archangels (Michael, Gabriel, Raffael and Uriel). On the right hand side the four late-antique church fathers (Augustus, Ambrosius, Hieronymus and Gregor the Great) can be seen. The figure of Saint Maria Immaculata is located in the middle of the church. All these statues were made by the well-known baroque sculptor Bernhard Michael Mandl and are one of the greatest Salzburg tourist attractions.

During the occupation period by the French in the days of Napoleon the Collegiate Church was used as a storage for hay.

In 1922 the Collegiate Church was the venue for the premiere of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s „Das Salzburger Große Welttheater“ during the Salzburg Festival of that year.»
