Also known as the Main Church of Alhos Vedros, this church was possibly founded by the end of the 13th century, but nothing has remained from the former construction. In the baptismal font, it is worth highlighting 18th century tiles depicting the baptism of Jesus. It is a single-nave temple with a main chapel and four lateral chapels. The Gothic style Chapel of São Sebastião (St. Sebastian) was erected in the 15th century by Pero Vicente, who was buried here with his wife Constança Vaz. The walls of the Manueline style Chapel of São João Baptista (Saint John the Baptist) are totally covered by edge type tiles that date back to the 16th century. Pero Gomes de Faria (1517) is buried on the chapel floor. He was a Knight of King D. Manuel I and probably the chapel’s founder. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário (the first on the left side) dates back to the 17th century, covered by 18th century tiles depicting the life of the Virgin. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos (the second on the left side) was built in the 16th century. Here you can observe a Moorish dome and the tombs of Mendonça Furtado family, who probably founded this chapel. The 15th century image of Our Lady Nossa Senhora dos Anjos has been kept in this chapel. It is made of stone and the Virgin holds Baby Jesus on her left arm.
