Fuerza de San Pedro is a military defence structure founded by Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi (1502 - 1572) in the year 1565, completed over a century and a half later.
It is the smallest and oldest triangular bastion fort in the country, rebuilt in 1738 to repel Muslim raiders. The fort underwent major renovation in the late 19th century. The victory of Americans at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 marked the end of the Spanish era in the Philippines Islands.
It has also witnessed the differnt changes in the history of Cebu island until much of it was destroyed during the Japanese occupation in time of WW2, when it served as a prison camp.
The fort is triangular in shape, with two sides facing the sea and the third side fronting the land. It has total inside area of 2 025 m2. The walls are 6,1 m high, 2,4 m thick and the towers are 9,1 m high from the ground level. Fourteen cannons were mounted in their emplacement. Most of them are still there today.
