Old Courthouse - St. Louis, MO - Domes of the (Under) World on Waymarking.com

According to the National Park Service, 192-foot high dome interior is decorated with four murals representing significant benchmarks of St. Louis history. The murals depict explorer Hernando de Soto discovering the Mississippi River, Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau founding St. Louis, the British attack on St. Louis during the Revolutionary War, and Cochetopa Pass, through which St. Louisans proposed to have a railroad line run to San Francisco. The murals are painted on the interior walls in the same cardinal directions as the events they depict.

Within the cupola, visitors are directed to find eight smaller paintings. At the cardinal compass points are the portraits of Ulysses S. Grant, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and Christopher Columbus. Between each portrait is a figurative depiction of Commerce, Administration, Agriculture, and the United States.

Admission to the Old Courthouse is free.
