The Naam Kem pier is located on the mainland of the southern Thai province of Phang-na. It lies on the Takuapa River opposite the small, resort island of Ko Kho Khao. This pleasant island is home to several stylish resorts, a few less costly hotels and bungalows, and the usual assortment of tourist places (wide range of restaurants). To reach the island one must cross the Takuapa river. This is easily done by obtaining the services of one of the numerous boats which ply this ~1km, quiet stretch of water. The waymark was made at the mainland pier.

To convey people across this stretch of water (as at March 2011) there was one large, car carrying, big boat, plus at least a dozen or so small boats ('long-tail' boats). These small boats can carry a dozen or so people, a few motor bikes, bags of goods, and whatever else people can haul on board.

As far as I can figure, the schedule is: when there are enough people to fill the boat, and when the boat driver is ready to go. I have never noticed a gift shop on any of the boats. I ticked yes to food and gifts shops on the ferry landings. This means, on the mainland, there is a small building with food and a small range of trinkets. On the island, at the pier, there are several good restaurants and a gift shop or two.

One different and interesting feature on the island is the Thung Tuk (known in English as the 'ancient city') archaeological site. ~1,000 years ago traders on the southern silk route landed their goods here to carry across the peninsular to avoid the long journey south around what is now Singapore.

fyi: at this date google maps shows two bridges over the river. There are no two bridges, let me repeat, no bridge over the river. Before I arrived I spent 5 mins explaining to my tuk tuk driver that there were bridges, while he was adamant that there were not. He was correct.
