Not many Iowa town signs include the population of the community, but Craig is an exceptional town. This small town of 102 people will be celebrating its 100th birthday in June of 2011.

The town of Craig in Plymouth County was incorporated in 1911, and the community is busy preparing for their centennial celebration. It was named for Craig Wright, an attorney for the railroad. The Farmers Elevator Company and St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, both established in that same year, are still going strong, but only four businesses remain after the first hundred years. One glance around this quiet community and it is hard to imagine the bustling activity surrounding the general store, banks, lumber yard, saloon, blacksmiths, or dance halls.
The highlights of this town are the tiny town hall and the covered postal boxes (is there no post office here?). Perhaps the sign at the edge of town states it best: “We’re small, but big enough to know you.” The community boasts a population of 102, but it will once again be a bustling town during their Centennial celebration this summer.
