Die Bedeutung des Bahnhofs liegt im Pendlerverkehr in die Tiroler Landeshauptstadt und in einer Knotenfunktion für den Ost-West-Verkehr (Budapest)–Wien–Salzburg–Wörgl–Innsbruck–(Zürich)/Bregenz und den Nord-Süd-Verkehr München–Wörgl–Innsbruck–Bozen–Verona–(Mailand/Venedig/Rom). Seit Dezember 2007 ist er auch zentraler Punkt der S-Bahn Tirol.
Die Eisenbahnstrecke zwischen Baumkirchen (circa 15 km östlich von Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof) und Wörgl Hauptbahnhof (genannt Unterinntalbahn) zählt zu den meistbefahrenen Eisenbahnstrecken Österreichs (bis zu 430 Züge am Tag) und wird deshalb derzeit im Zuge der TEN-Achse Berlin–Palermo viergleisig ausgebaut. In Wörgl Hbf teilt sich die Bahnstrecke in den nördlichen Ast über Kufstein nach Salzburg und München einerseits und in den östlichen Ast über Zell am See nach Salzburg, Graz und Klagenfurt (Giselabahn) andererseits.
Der Hauptbahnhof hat acht Durchfahrtsgleise – wobei Bahnsteig 1 als „Hausbahnsteig“ ebenerdig erreichbar ist und Bahnsteig 8 von Osten zugänglich (ausschließlich) für die Autoverladung[1] auf Autoreisezüge dient – und vier Kopfgleise (Bahnsteige 21–22, 31 und 41) für den regionalen Personenverkehr über die Mittenwaldbahn, die Arlbergbahn und die Brennerbahn.
Der Hauptbahnhof ist auch zentrale Station der Linien S1 , S2 und S3 sowie Endpunkt der Linien S4 und S5 der S-Bahn Tirol.
Zum Areal des Hauptbahnhofs gehört noch der Frachtenbahnhof Innsbruck, der u. a. wegen der 1994 fertiggestellten Güterzugsumfahrung Innsbruck (Inntaltunnel) seine Bedeutung teilweise verloren hat und im Zuge der Stadtentwicklung in ein Wohngebiet umgewandelt werden soll. Der Verschiebebahnhof des Eisenbahnknotens Innsbruck befindet sich in Hall in Tirol.

The importance of the station is located in the commuter traffic in the capital of Tyrol and in a node function for the East-West traffic (Budapest)-Vienna-Salzburg-Wörgl-Innsbruck (Zurich) / Bregenz and the North-South trade München-Wörgl-Innsbruck-Bolzano-Verona (Milan / Venice / Rome). Since December 2007 he is also a central point of the S-Bahn Tyrol.
The railway line between a rock churches (about 15 km east of Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof) and Wörgl Central Station (called the Lower Inn Valley railway) is one of the busiest railway lines in Austria (up to 430 trains a day) and is therefore built currently as part of the TEN-axis Berlin-Palermo four tracks. The main station is also central station for the S1, S2 and S3 and S4 and S5 endpoint of the lines of the S-Bahn Tyrol.
The complex is still the main station of the freight station of Innsbruck, who has lost others because of the freight train bypass completed in 1994 Innsbruck (Inntaltunnel) its importance in part, to be transformed in the course of urban development in a residential area. The shunting yard of the railway junction Innsbruck is located in Hall in Tirol.
