Three Sioux quartzite rocks pay honor to one of the city’s most well known citizens. Each of the trio displays a plaque dedicated to the memory of Chris Larsen, Jr. and his role in the I-29 highway system. They are found in Chris Larsen Park along the Missouri River near the visitor’s center.
The marker on the left has the emblem of the Rotary Club and reads: The Sioux City downtown Rotary Club is proud to honor past president Chris Larsen, Jr., a loyal Rotarian, civic leader, and champion of good highways for Iowa.
The middle plaque has a map of the state with the interstates marked on it; Sioux City marked with a star. It says: Iowa State Interstate System: This park is named for Chris Larsen, Jr. In honor of his leadership in the development of the interstate highway system in Iowa. As Chairman of the Iowa Highway Commission, he, with the help of many fellow Rotarians, was able to bring the new I-29 Interstate through Iowa and Sioux City.
The rock on the left holds a plaque with the image of Chris Larsen, Jr. with the dates 1905-1969.
The Rotary Club was instrumental in establishing the Chris Larsen Park in recognition of his influence in this community. It was dedicated in the summer of 1972. The park has paved walking trail that follows the riverfront, playgrounds, picnic shelter, boat ramp, Anderson Dance Pavilion, and the Spirit of Siouxland Memorial.
