It is situated in the parish of Santa Maria de Belém, near the right bank of
the Tagus in Lisbon, placed in the hollow of the wall north of the fort of Bom
Sucesso, which complements it.
The war that broke out from 1961 to 1975 on several fronts in the former
Portuguese Overseas Territories, Angola, Mozambique and Guinea, led to a huge
financial effort and led to an even greater human sacrifice, which led to the
extinction of many soldiers at the dawn of their lives.
In order to perpetuate the memory of those Soldiers In order to perpetuate
the memory of these fighters, was launched on May 12, 1993, the foundation stone,
in a ceremony presided by the Minister of National Defence and, being attended
by the Secretary of State for National Defence, the Chief of General Staff of
the Armed Forces Chief of Staff of Army, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Staff of
the Air Force, representatives of the Municipality of Lisbon, the Port of Lisbon
and the Portuguese Institute of Cultural Heritage , Executive Committee of the
Monument, among others.
This symbolic ceremony consisted of a deposition accompanied by a rolling
stone, which were placed at the base of the vertical beam NW side of the portico.
Inside the roll, sealed and signed a parchment with the following text:
'The twelve days of May, nineteen hundred and ninety-three in this city of
Lisbon and Forte do Bom Sucesso, it launched the first stone of this monument.
Proceeded to launch the Minister of the Presidency and National Defence, and
present the entities signing this document. "
On Saturday, February 5, 2000 and also attended by the President of the
Republic opened its tombstones with the names of soldiers who died in the
service of Portugal, in the hollow of the wall north of the Fort of Good Success,
an initiative of the Ministry of Defence and the League of Combatants
