Am Fuß der Nordkette, über den Dächern Innsbrucks, der Landeshauptstadt von Tirol, befindet sich Europas höchstgelegener Zoo (750 m). Auf etwas mehr als 4 ha werden in naturnah gestalteten Gehegen, Terrarien und Aquarien etwa 2000 Alpentiere von rund 150 Arten gepflegt. Kein anderer Zoo der Welt zeigt eine derart vollständige Sammlung von Wildtieren aus dem Alpenraum. Dies ist nur ein Grund, weshalb hier eine Reihe von Welterstzuchten und bemerkenswerte Nachzuchterfolge gelungen sind.
Der Alpenzoo ist ein gemeinnütziger Verein, der die jährlichen Betriebsmittel (mit Unterstützung der Stadt Innsbruck und des Landes Tirol) überwiegend selbst erwirtschaftet. Die „Freunde des Alpenzoo“ als Förderverein, Sponsoren, Tierpaten und Spender tragen ebenfalls zur wirtschaftlichen Absicherung bei. Mit jährlich rund 300 000 Besuchern ist der Alpenzoo die größte landeskulturelle Einrichtung Tirols. Als Arbeitgeber sichert er dauerhaft Arbeitsplätze für rund 30 MitarbeiterInnen.
