He was Mayor of Povoa de Varzim.
He devoted himself to defending the fishermen's and launched a strong campaign for the construction of the fishing port of Povoa de Varzim, completed in the 60's, and the construction of the Fisherman's House, which was the first in the country to be built in 1926 .
Collaborated with the press, as with the Trade and Commerce Póvoa Port and published some works, such as Morality and Religion (1920), optimists and pessimists (1949), The Vocation of the Portuguese Colonization (1961) and Word, and Vigor Action (1966).
Calafate Vasques died on December 4, 1963, in Povoa de Varzim. The community povoense erected a monument to him which his son was the author Rui Calafate.
