Church of St. James (Kostel Sv. Jakuba), one of Baroque sacral jewels of Litomerice, is nowadays administered together with Litomerice Diocese Charity by Dominican order and is also used by them for worships.
Late Baroque Church of St. James (Kostel Sv. Jakuba), belonging to Dominican order, is one of several beautiful Baroque churches in town Litomerice. The church is a part of monastery in Litomerice, the oldest in the town, which was firstly mentioned in the year 1233. Monastery was established by the Bishop of Prague, Jan II, as a church monastery for Franciscan order. After it was destroyed in the Thirty Years War it laid for a long time in ruins. The monastery and the church were rebuilt in the late Baroque style by Octavio Broggio during years 1730-1740. However, it was not completed until after his death in 1758. The main Baroque altar from the year 1769 is the work of Jan Hennevogel. After the abolition of the Franciscan order thanks to the edict of Emperor Joseph II, the Dominicans were transferred here in 1788. In the monastery complex has a seat Litomerice Diocese Charity, Catholic charitative organisation administering here retiremnet house.
