Oklahoma's 2007 Centennial celebration (celebrating 100 years of Statehood) was comprised of hundreds of cultural projects throughout the state. The Devon Mosaic might just be the most beautiful.

Devon Energy Corporation is a large independent oil and gas producer headquartered in Oklahoma City. They are in the process of constructing a 50-floor skyscraper in the heart of downtown, which can be seen in the background of the lead photo. The building is now at its 34-floor level and is expected to be completed some time in 2012.

Devon Energy contributes to many community projects and this mosaic is but an example. It was dedicated on October 3, 2007 and is an 1150 sq. ft. mosaic mural depicting Oklahoma landscapes and wildlife with the purpose of educating the public about official state symbols and emblems from nature. This is a nine-panel work constructed of handmade porcelain and Oklahoma clay tiles.

Oklahoma City Community College Art Instructor Mary Ann Moore was the mosaicist and Project Director. She designed the mosaic and oversaw its installation. She worked with local artists and community college students.

The center of the mosaic is recessed with water troughs emptying into a pool and cascading over the wall into the canal. The mosaic in this area shows the sun, a beaver and raccoon. To the south, the panel shows the State tree, a large blooming Redbud, and a deer which are plentiful in Oklahoma. To the south of this is a large bison so representative of the early frontier days of Indian Territory, and a "hawk making lazy circles in the sky" which we sung about in the musical "Oklahoma."

To the north of the waterfall, three Native American women are pouring water out of pottery, and the effect is to show them pouring it into troughs, through which real water flows out of three openings in the wall.

Standing close to the mosaic, it is possible to see dozens of names of artists who worked on this project. In the photo gallery are photos showing detail of a small frog and the name Colleen.

This is an extraordinary work which can be viewed from above, on the first floor level of the surrounding buildings, as well as from the lower level of the canal. Sightseeing boats travel to this northwest end of the canal before turning back into the entertainment parts of Bricktown. This Devon Mosaic is an eye-opening, and significantly Oklahoman work, well worth your visit.
