Liebenfels wurde 1312 als Liewenvelse erstmals urkundlich genannt. Zwischen 1484 und 1490 war die Burg von den Ungarn erobert, besetzt und dabei teilweise zerstört worden. Aus dieser Besatzungszeit stammen noch Bollwerkreste unterhalb der mittelalterlichen Anlage.
Valvasor stellt die Burg um 1690 bereits als „fast verödet“ dar.
Bemerkenswert sind die beiden massiven Bergfriede aus dem 13./14. Jahrhundert, die durch die ungewöhnlich ausgedehnte Vorburg getrennt sind. Der größere der beiden Türme umfasst sechs Geschosse und bildete den Kern der sehr kleinen und stark befestigten Hochburg. Dieser Bergfried verfügt über auffällige Fenstergruppen im obersten Geschoss, die von F. X. Kohla als Signal-Fenster gedeutet wurden. Auch heute noch ist die Bedeutung dieser Fenster unklar. In der Südwest-Ecke der ausgedehnten Vorburg, in der Nähe des Tors, befindet sich der zweite, viergeschössige Bergfried.
Die Hochburg, die sich um den größeren Bergfried gruppiert, beinhaltet auch den ehemaligen Palas, der erstaunlich schmal ausgeführt wurde und dadurch nur wenig Wohnraum bot. In der Nord-Westecke befindet sich eine auffällige fünfteilige Fenstergruppe, die auf eine Blockwerkstube hindeutet.
Die Anlage ist mit einer schönen gotischen Ringmauer mit noch erhaltenen Zinnen umgeben. Die Burgkapelle und das neuere und geräumigere Wohngebäude, das sich im Westen an die Hochburg anschließt, stammen aus der Renaissance.

Love rock was named in 1312 as Liewenvelse first documented. Between 1484 and 1490 the castle was conquered by the Hungarians, occupied, and it was partially destroyed. From this occupation are even Bulwark remains below the medieval system.
Valvasor is the castle in 1690 already as "almost deserted" dar.
Note the two massive keep from the 13th/14th. Century, which are separated by the unusually broad bailey. The larger of the two towers consists of six floors, and formed the core of the very small and heavily fortified stronghold. This keep has conspicuous groups of windows on the top floor of the FX Kohla were interpreted as a signal window. Even today, the importance of this window is unclear. In the southwest corner of the vast front building, near the gate, is the second, four storey keep.
The fortress, which is grouped around the larger dungeon, also includes the former palace that was running surprisingly narrow and thus provided little housing. In the north-west corner there is a striking five-window group, indicating a block plant room.
The complex is surrounded with a beautiful Gothic city walls with preserved battlements. The castle chapel and the newer and more spacious residential building, which adjoins the west by the high castle date from the Renaissance.
