Charles Wells climbed this hill in 1902 in the area now known as Park Road North. He sunk his own well and tapped into an underground water source filtered through chalk and limestone. He had found his own artesian well.

This is the water used in the beer produced from the Wells and Young's brewery which is a worldwide industry. After 90 years it is still flowing strong and providing water for tasty refreshment.

The well is housed in a square, brick tower and is a little known place in a busy area.
