The Immaculate Conception Church was built in 1904. When built the building was located on the opposite side of the Chena River at was then the edge of the town on Dunkel Street. The building was was a rougher building than it is today. In 1906 the town found a need for a hospital which was constructed on the north side of the river. The priest found it difficult to attend to those in the hospital and to conduct daily services in the church so it was decided to move the church across the river and close to the hospital. Near the hospital was an old saw mill site which was chosen to be the new location for the church. Contractors were consulted on the move and they had recommend a bridge be built across the river however the priest felt that would be too expensive so he came up with his own plan. The church was jacked up by volunteers and rolled across the river on logs across the ice in November 1911. The church was placed on a foundation which allowed a basement to be added to the church in 1912. The church has been renovated a few times over the years including the addition of the stained glass windows in 1926. The church continues to serve as a parish church. From 1962 to 1966 Immaculate Conception served as Cathedral of the North, in 1966 a new cathedral was built for the Diocese of Fairbanks.
