ROC Posts were built for use in a nuclear conflict and would have been manned by volunteers from the Royal Observer Corps. They would be responsible for reporting nuclear blasts and monitoring fallout. The post was opened in 1962 and closed in 1991 after the end of the cold war.

The Subterranea Britannica website has this report from 2001 with some great photos: visit link

'All surface features remain intact, the hatch is locked. The post is owned by a local Ashwell resident who wants to maintain it in good condition as an item of interest for the community. Benches and tables still exist although there are no instruments remaining. It is open to the public once every two years during 'Ashwell at home day', usually a Sunday in April.'

There is a small pull-in where you can park and have a look, but be careful and respectful. It is important to preserve these ROC Posts for posterity.
