The Fort Cornwallis lighthouse has long stood on this spot, guiding mariners into the busy port of Georgetown and through the waters between Penang Island and the mainland. The lighthouse was built in 1882, and refurbished several times since.
According to the informational plaque (cope in gallery), the lighthouse light is visible for 16 nautical miles, has a light characteristic of FI. R. 2S, 27 metres above ground.
The lighthouse is easily found in the grounds of Fort Cornwallis (a major tourist spot), near the Penang dock area.
