This was an unexpected find, on the resort and retirement island of Penang, in northern Malaysia. The memorial is in the form of a obelisk, on a raised platform, with an inscription, behind a metal fence. When I visited the gate of the fence was locked.
The memorial was originally erected for those who fell in World War One, the inscription on the obelisk reads '1914-1918', however, there is a second inscription, by the 'Penang Veterans Association', commemorating service in later wars. The memorial was constructed in 1922. When I visited (February 2011) there was a wreath on the memorial.
