In 1980 Manchester became the first city in the world to declare itself a nuclear free zone. AS part of this the council formed policies on things such as nuclear emergency planning and nuclear transportation.

In 1986 the council held a competition to celebrate their nuclear free status, and they placed the winning sculpture in a peace garden next to the Town Hall.

This sculpture did not win the competition but was considered good enough to be commissioned.

It is in Castlefield where there are exposed foundations of the old Roman fort.

Since 1980 over 4000 cities have now followed Manchester’s example.
