The statues are the rulers of England from King William I in 1066 up to and including Queen Victoria who was on the throne when the then Town Hall was built in 1873.

King Edward I was born 18th June 1239 and reigned as King of England from 16th November 1272 – 7th July 1307.

Edward had helped his father end a rebellion by the barons and had then gone to the Holy Land on a crusade but did not have much success. He heard that Henry had died in his way back to England, but it was another 2 years before he made it back to England.

He was finally crowned at Westminster on 19th August 1274.

In the early part of his reign he reformed the royal administration and changed various criminal and property laws.

However he then became involved in rebellions in Wales. Eventually he conquered Wales and incorporated it as part of England. He also built a number of castles and towns and populated them with Englishmen. In 1301 Edward’s son was invested as the first prince of Wales.

Edward also became involved in disputes in Scotland. He was originally asked to arbitrate a succession dispute but then tried to insist that in return he should act as feudal overlord to the Scots. Eventually John Balliol was chosen as the successor, but Edward still insisted in acting as overlord.

The Scots rebelled against this and joined forces with France. Edward put down this rebellion and confiscated the Stone of Destiny, the Scottish coronation stone, and brought it to London. The stone was to remain there until it was returned in 1966.

Edward thought he had defeated the Scots, but further rebellions lead by William Wallace meant that there were many ongoing battles. One of the claimants to the Scots throne, Robert the Bruce sided with the English and in 1305 Wallace was betrayed and handed over to the English who had him publicly executed.

Robert the Bruce now declared himself King of Scotland and he himself rebelled against the English. Whilst Edward was campaigning against Bruce, he fell ill with dysentery and died on 7th July 1307.
