This western city gate built by Mausolus in 364 BC and has been recently restored.

Ancient Halicarnassus, now called Bodrum, had two entrances to it. Situated towards the west of Bodrum on the extreme side of Turgutreis Caddesi is one of them called The Myndos Gate. This is one of the surviving gates that formed a part of the towns wall. Gumusluk was earlier known as Myndos, hence the name of the gate. The walls are no longer there today but it is estimated that they spanned 7 km originally and were believed to have been constructed in the 4th century BC by King Mausolus. The wall ran from the west end of the harbor towards the Goktepe.
It was in 333 B.C that Alexander the Great sent his soldiers and they had an unimaginably tough time to cross Myndos gate to capture ancient town of Halicarnassus. In this process a lot of Alexanders soldiers died by drowning in the trench in front of the gate which was filled with water. Alexander is said to have left more than 2500 of his able soldiers to take over the town. It took another year for the soldiers to finally take over the city. They destroyed most of the structures in the city except for the Mausoleum.
Today, only two tower like structures stand tall and strong at the site. The middle portion of the gate was destroyed.
