The old jail at Ongaonga has been preserved as a slice of local history. It is part of a collection of old buildings from the area, now placed in the Historic Village.

Another old jail at the historic village has been converted into the toilet block. Going to the toilet is like going to jail, the doors still have the heavy metal peep holes.

The historic village is open to the public on Sundays from 2pm - 4pm, or by request for group bookings, phone: (06) 856 6735. Visitors can pick up a map and brochure on any day of the week from the Ongaonga General Store and take a walk through historic Ongaonga village.
