This bench is dedicated to the Waterline, a defensive work, consisting of dikes and locks to inundate (overflow) an area to stop the enemy from progressing.
The original Waterline dates back to the 1670s and was extended to the East of Utrecht in 1815. It was later extended with bunkers with and without guns and served briefly during the initial attack bu the Germans in 1940, but paratroopers had rendered the concept of an inundated area obsolete.
The area was supposed to be filled with water to about 40 cm (16 inches), too shallow for boats and too deep for people or carriages. Moreover in the inundated and muddy waters invisible ditches, fences and shrubs would make any progress extremely difficult and hazardous.
The bench contains various inscriptions containing basically the above-mentioned information.
The bench faces south and has two levels to sit on.
