?[ENG] The Navio Hospital Gil Eannes, built in Viana do Castelo in 1955, has supported for decades, the Portuguese cod fishing fleet which operated on the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland. Off the cod fleet, was rotting on the docks of Lisbon for many years.
In 1998, the Foundation Gil Eannes, considering the emotional and cultural heritage of the city, bought it for scrap for about 250 000 euros, after an unprecedented campaign that involved all social Viana.
On January 31, 1998, he was greeted festively in Foz do Lima, where, after being cleaned and restored, opened to the public, taking as a pole of attraction to Viana do Castelo.
The conversion turned it into a museum space, integrating exhibition halls, meeting room, four multimedia kiosks and simulator of navigation.
