The elevator was built in 1956 by the Matanuska Maid Co-op. The elevator was built to store Alaska grown barley for use in Alaska. The elevator stands 70-foot tall. The Co-op went bankrupt in 1982, and ownership transferred to the State of Alaska as the largest lender to the Co-op. The state had intended to use it to store barley from the Delta Junction area however that project did not grow as much as the state had thought. The elevator was then converted to a feed mill to support local dairy farmers. In 1991 the state closed that facility as it was determined to be illegal for the state to compete with private enterprise. The elevator has been vacant since.
