The novel is set in a time of turmoil in England. King Richard I, known as Richard Coeur-de-Lion is out of the country fighting in the crusades. Meanwhile in England there are numerous disputes over land and inheritance of titles.

The 4 characters in this tableau act as bell ringers, using their fists to hit the bells.

Richard Coeur-de-Lion and Friar Truck strike the large bells on the hour. Robin Hood and Gurth the swineherd strike the smaller bells on the 1/4 hours.

The tableau can be found in the Thornton Arcade, a Victorian shopping arcade in Leeds city centre which was built in 1877. This clock and bell structure is at the Lands Lane end of the building. The figures were made by the Leeds sculptor John Wormald Appleyard.

Robin Hood is a supposedly historical figure who lost his lands whilst King Richard was out of the country. In the book he is supposedly Robin of Locksley. Regardless of whether Robin of Locksley really existed, or even became Robin Hood, the basis of the tableau is the fictional story in Ivanhoe. Richard Coeur-de-Lion, definitely did exist as a real person, but again in this context he is appearing as a character in the novel.
