This playhouse was built for Lucy J. Haskell when she was 5 years old. It is believed that her grandfather, John E. Hayner, commissioned prominent local architect, Lucas J. Pfeiffenberger, to design the Queen Anne style playhouse. In 1889, at age nine, Lucy died of diphtheria. When Lucy's mother died in 1932, her family left the estate to the City of Alton for educational and recreational purposes. The playhouse was retained in memory of Lucy.
