The monument is shaped like a stylized caravel, with the shield of Portugal on the sides and the sword of the Royal House of Avis on the entry. D. Henry the Navigator, stands at the prow, with a galleon in the hands. Descendants in two rows on each side of the monument, are statues of heroes related to Portuguese Discoveries. On the west lies the poet Camões, with a copy of The Lusiads, painter Nuno Gonçalves with a palette as well as famous navigators, cartographers and kings

Prominently on the right bank of the Tagus River, the monument was erected to honor those involved in the process of the Portuguese Discoveries.
The original monument was commissioned by the regime of António de Oliveira Salazar to architects Telmo Cottinelli (1897-1948) and Leopoldo de Almeida (1898-1975), for the Portuguese World Exhibition (1940), and was dismantled in 1958.

The current, a replica of the former, was built in concrete with stone sculptures of lioz, rising to 50 feet tall. It was opened in 1960 in the context of the commemoration of the five hundred years after the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.
