These bones were originally given to Whitby by Norway in 1963. They commemorate Whitby's rich whaling history. Prior to 1833 sailing ships from Whitby would lower boats manned by 6 men, these men would then kill the whales using hand made harpoons. Countless men were lost.
The wild coast weather finally took their toll on the arch and it was replaced in 2002 with the jaw of a Bowhead Whale by Whitby's twin town of Barrow Alaska.
