Until the industrial revolution Bradford had been quite a small town. However it then rapidly grew and developed as a major industrial town with many woollen mills.

Horton lay to the East of Bradford and was still rural, and separated by fields from Bradford. In 1847 Horton was incorporated into Bradford when it was given its Town charter by Queen Victoria.

After this time Great Horton also developed quite rapidly, and in recognition of this the combined police and fire station was built sometime in the 1890s. It also had attached stables.

For a time after it ceased to be a fire and police station it was occupied by Bradford Area Health Authority. Nowadays the building is occupied by Redworth Associates Limited a Building Services Consulting Engineering company.
