The Carvalhal was repopulated after the reconquest of the Moors in 1147 Obidos, D. Afonso Henriques. In 1371, D. Fernando detach Cadaval Óbidos Carvalhal and became part of the county Cadaval; on 24 October 1855 came to belong to Óbidos and 28 March 1914, with the creation of Bombarral county became part of the new county . The Parish parsonage was the presentation of the prior benefit of Our Lady of the Assumption of Obidos to the new pastoral restoration of the Patriarchate, as in the century. XX. The Sanctuary was built on the ruins of an early chapel dedicated to St. Peter Finis Terra that collapsed in the earthquake of 1755. Yet without accurate data, since the image of the Lord Jesus had gathered in the chancel of that shrine which would be the first parish church. The Image of the Lord Jesus is a unique beauty, mystery and legend surrounds, not knowing exactly where they originated. It may be true in a case where, during the Protestant Reformation in Central Europe, the picture has been thrown overboard, as in the case of radical Protestant movement, been found on the beach in Peniche.
legend says, "walked a fisherman in the sea of Peniche, but this is when you see a box to float near the boat, with much curiosity, drag the box to the beach and then a voice was heard saying: Take me to power .. . The fisherman, convinced he was a person inside the box, opened it and was surprised to look at the image of the crucified. Obedient to that mysterious voice, the fisherman put his picture on his shoulders and began walking in the direction you would normally do the sale of fish. The picture will not weighed, but when he arrived at the shrine of St. Peter, became so heavy that it could not go any further. It was the houses that stood close to call someone for help, but the weight of the image was so much that they decided to leave it at the Chapel. It was soon announced the news at that chapel was "devout ancient human image of Christ crucified, by which God works miracles and he very muytos of devotees attended the Villas Romeyros circunvisinhas.
Thus, throughout the century. And early nineteenth century. Century, the temple was expanded, built up houses for pilgrims and other accommodations to welcome the pilgrims. The oldest bell which is one of the towers of the church is dated 1737 with the following inscription: "Jesus Bone-Miserere Nobis", would be the only original church bell, the other three bells, the same tower, dating from 1862. The second tower was built by Father Jose da Costa Prata and concluded in 1909. The trees of the churchyard was planted in April 1867. The bandstand was built in 1895. In 1910 the priest himself acquired the land in the lower part of the Sanctuary, that forests and walled, extending substantially the precincts of the shrine.
